1 Thessalonians 5:18 – ‘In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of GOD in Christ Jesus concerning you.’
Let’s talk about thankfulness.
Not every day is easy. But even the tough ones offer something to thank GOD for. Waking up. Breathing. Having someone who cares. Having a savior who never leaves you.
We often think of gratitude as something we show when life is going well. When bills are paid, health is good, and people are kind. But the real test of gratitude is how we respond when life isn’t smooth. When the bills pile up, when the diagnosis comes in, when the people we love disappoint us. It’s in those moments that thanksgiving becomes a choice—not a reaction.
1 Thessalonians 5:18 tells us to give thanks “in every thing.” That means even in confusion. Even in sorrow. Even in waiting. Not because everything feels good, but because we believe GOD is still good. That’s a mindset shift. That’s faith.
Gratitude in hard times doesn’t deny pain—it transforms it. It reminds us that even in darkness, there are flickers of light. It helps us to focus not just on what we lack, but on what we still have.
Some days, gratitude starts small. You thank GOD for waking you up. For the coffee in your cup. For the roof over your head. For the person who checked in on you. And as you speak those thank-yous out loud, your heart begins to shift.
Gratitude is not about pretending everything’s fine. It’s about declaring that even when it’s not, you’re still anchored. You’re still loved. You’re still standing.
And it’s okay to admit when you’re struggling. GOD never asked us to fake it. But what he does ask is that we remember him—even when it hurts. Especially when it hurts. Because that’s when his presence becomes most powerful.
When we give thanks in all things, we invite peace. We push back against bitterness. We say, “This day may be hard, but it’s not hopeless.” And that perspective is everything.
Think about Jesus. He gave thanks before breaking bread, knowing betrayal was coming. He gave thanks even as he approached the cross. That’s divine gratitude—not tied to comfort, but rooted in trust.
And we can have that too. We can learn to thank GOD not just after the breakthrough, but in the middle of the storm. That’s how we keep going.
You may be going through something right now that feels heavy. Maybe you’re caring for someone who’s sick. Maybe your body aches. Maybe your finances are tight. Maybe your heart feels lonely. It’s okay to feel it. But also look for what you can thank GOD for right in that place.
Did someone smile at you today? Did the sun shine through your window? Did you have a moment to pray? Did someone remind you that you’re not alone? Those are blessings too.
We’re not made to carry gratitude alone. That’s why community matters. Sometimes you need to hear someone else’s testimony to be reminded of your own. Sometimes seeing someone else’s strength helps you find yours again.
So don’t keep your gratitude to yourself. Speak it. Share it. Write it down. Let others know that even on the hard days, GOD is still worthy.
The enemy wants you to focus only on what’s wrong. But gratitude opens your eyes to what’s right. It opens your heart to joy. It clears space for peace. And it draws you closer to the one who never leaves.
Maybe this week, you can start a small practice: Write down three things every day you’re thankful for. They don’t have to be big. They just have to be real. Watch how your spirit changes.
Gratitude doesn’t mean you stop crying. It means you cry, but you still believe. It means you hurt, but you still hope. It means you fall, but you still praise.
Being grateful, even on the hard days, keeps you connected to truth. It reminds you that GOD is still working. Still loving. Still providing. Still present.
When you practice gratitude, your problems may not disappear—but your strength grows. Your peace deepens. And your faith shines.
So if today feels heavy, pause. Breathe. Say thank you, GOD. Thank you for waking me up. Thank you for walking with me. Thank you for never letting go.
Let gratitude lead you through the valley. Let it open your eyes to the beauty still surrounding you.
You are not forgotten. You are not forsaken. You are still held by the hand of GOD. And that, my friend, is always worth thanking him for.
GOD, give us grateful hearts, no matter the season. Help us to find joy even when life is heavy. Let our thankfulness rise above our pain, and draw us closer to you. In Jesus’ name—Amen.
