Welcome back to JUST STRAIGHT TALK. This is R-E SAMPLE, and today we’re talking about something we all struggle with at times—**getting good sleep and staying balanced**. For many of us, especially as we age, sleep becomes harder to come by. And when sleep is off, everything else can start to feel off too.

You ever wake up feeling just as tired as when you went to bed? Or maybe you’re up all night thinking about the bills, the family, your health, or just the state of the world. I know that feeling. That tossing and turning, mind racing, can’t shut it down feeling.

So today, let’s slow it down and talk about what it takes to protect your rest, manage your stress, and restore the balance in your life. Because Jehovah wants us to rest—not just physically, but mentally and spiritually too.

Jehovah, calm our minds and give us rest. Help us let go of worry and trust you more. In this moment, allow us to slow down, breathe deeply, and remember that you are in control. We thank you for peace, and we ask for wisdom in learning to care for our minds and bodies. In Jesus’ name—Amen.

Let’s be real—**lack of sleep wears you down**. It’s not just about being tired. When we don’t get enough quality rest, it can lead to:

– Irritability and mood swings

– Confusion and memory issues

– Weak immune system

– Higher blood pressure

– More aches and pains

And what makes it worse? **Stress.** The kind that creeps into your thoughts during the quiet of night. That stress piles on and makes it even harder to rest, creating a cycle that’s hard to break.

But here’s the good news: **you can take steps to reset.**

1. **Establish a Bedtime Routine.**

Your body responds to routine. Try going to bed and waking up at the same time every day—even weekends. Start winding down about 30 to 60 minutes before bed. Turn off bright lights, limit loud noise, and avoid screens like your tv or your phone.

2. **Cut the Caffeine.**

Caffeine hides in more than just coffee. Sodas, teas, even some over-the-counter medications contain it. Try cutting off all caffeine by early afternoon.

3. **Create a Calming Sleep Environment.**

Dim lighting, a cool room, and a comfortable bed can all help. Some folks use white noise machines or soft instrumental music. Personally, I like to listen to calming scripture or soft gospel music. It settles my spirit and helps me drift into peaceful sleep.

4. **Watch What You Eat Late at Night.**

Heavy meals before bed can lead to indigestion and restlessness. Try to eat dinner at least two hours before you lie down.

5. **Get Some Movement During the Day.**

Even light exercise like stretching or walking can help your body feel more ready to rest when it’s time.

### Managing Stress

Now let’s talk about that stress. You can’t sleep because your mind won’t turn off. That’s real. But stress can be managed. You don’t have to let it take over.

Here’s what I recommend:

– **Deep Breathing.**

Try this tonight: breathe in for four counts, hold it for four, breathe out for four. Do that a few times in bed, and you’ll feel your heart rate slow down.

– **Write it Down.**

Sometimes your mind is racing because it’s trying to hold on to too much. Keep a notepad by your bed and write things down before sleep. It helps clear mental clutter.

– **Say a Prayer.**

When I’m overwhelmed, I talk to Jehovah right in bed. Just like this: “Lord, you see what’s on my heart. Help me to rest and trust you with what I can’t control.” That simple prayer has brought me peace many nights.

– **Limit Negativity.**

News, arguments, drama—these things add stress without you realizing it. Protect your peace by stepping away from stressful conversations or media before bed.

### Restoring Balance in Your Life

Balance doesn’t mean you have everything perfect. It means you’ve got some things in order, spiritually, emotionally, and physically.

Ask yourself:

– Are you setting aside quiet time for God?

– Are you saying no to things that drain you?

– Are you giving yourself permission to rest?

Balance is about making sure **you don’t lose yourself** in trying to take care of everything and everyone else.

Here’s the truth: **Jehovah doesn’t want you burned out.** He gives rest to the weary. That means He wants you to pause, breathe, and trust Him with the load.

Matthew 11:28 says, *“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”*

That’s not just physical rest—that’s soul rest. Jesus knows what you’re carrying. He invites you to lay it down and receive peace.

Protect your peace. Don’t wait until your body breaks down or your mind gives out. Start today by honoring the rest your body and spirit need. Create space for quiet. Turn your worries into prayers. And make sleep a priority—not a luxury.

You are not weak for needing rest. You are wise for recognizing its value.

Start with one step tonight. Maybe it’s turning off the phone early. Maybe it’s praying before bed. Maybe it’s breathing deep. But whatever it is—do it with intention, and let Jehovah meet you in the quiet.

I’m R-E SAMPLE with JUST STRAIGHT TALK. Rest is not a sign of giving up—it’s a way to stay strong. Sleep well, live well, and I’ll see you next time.
