Courage Doesn’t Retire: Stepping Out in Faith at Any Age

Joshua 1:9 – ‘Be strong and of a good courage… for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.’

Let’s close this powerful season with a bold reminder: courage doesn’t retire. It doesn’t expire with age. It doesn’t disappear just because your pace is slower or your hair has turned gray. In fact, some of the greatest acts of courage come later in life — when you’ve seen enough to know what really matters and lived long enough to know the cost of fear.

Joshua 1:9 tells us to be strong and of a good courage — not because everything is easy or clear, but because the lord your God is with you wherever you go. That promise doesn’t change just because you turned 60, 70, or 80. God’s presence doesn’t walk away when you stop working a full-time job. His purpose for you didn’t end when the kids grew up and moved out. He’s still calling. Still guiding. Still opening doors.

You’re never too old to try something new. To take a leap of faith. To step into an assignment you thought had passed you by. Maybe you’ve had a dream sitting on the shelf — a book you’ve wanted to write, a class you wanted to teach, a business you dreamed of starting, or a community you wanted to serve. Well, now is still your time. Don’t let fear tell you it’s too late.

Faith doesn’t run on a retirement clock. Abraham was 75 when he packed up and followed God into the unknown. Moses was 80 when God told him to go speak to Pharaoh. And let’s not forget Caleb — who at 85 said, “Give me this mountain.” That’s courage. That’s faith. That’s believing that age doesn’t limit what God can do.

We need more seniors to rise up with fresh courage. Not reckless, but holy boldness. Courage to speak when everyone else is silent. Courage to start something when others say, “You’re too old.” Courage to keep growing, keep trying, keep showing up. Because someone is watching you. Someone is being inspired by your boldness.

It takes courage to say, “I’m not done yet.” Courage to go back to school. Courage to start a ministry or become a mentor. Courage to leave behind what’s familiar for what’s faithful. It takes courage to trust Jehovah when you can’t see the next step — and still move anyway.

Many people slow down in spirit before they slow down in body. They convince themselves that their best years are behind them. But God says otherwise. He says, “I will do a new thing.” He says, “Your latter shall be greater.” He says, “You still have fruit to bear in your old age.” So don’t fold your hands when God is still calling you to raise them.

Sometimes stepping out in faith means letting go of comfort. It means risking failure or rejection. But God never promised comfort — He promised presence. And wherever he leads you, he’s already there.

What does courage look like today? It could be forgiving someone who hurt you decades ago. It could be moving closer to your children to rebuild family bonds. It could be finally speaking your truth. It could be walking into a church after years away. It could be letting someone love you again after heartbreak.

For others, courage is standing up for what’s right when culture pushes you to stay quiet. It’s sharing your testimony with a young person. It’s showing up at a protest for justice. It’s calling a lawmaker. It’s saying, “I may be old, but I’m not afraid.”

Courage doesn’t mean you don’t feel fear. It means fear doesn’t make your decisions. It means faith leads the way. It means doing it afraid — with your knees shaking, but your heart trusting.

You’ve got history with Jehovah. You’ve seen him come through. You’ve watched him work miracles. That should give you even more confidence to walk forward, not less. You know his voice. You’ve felt his peace. So now’s the time to walk in it fully.

Don’t waste this season of life watching TV all day or scrolling through your phone. Yes, rest is good. You’ve earned it. But don’t settle there. There’s still work to be done. Still prayers to be prayed. Still wisdom to be shared. Still lives to be touched by your presence.

You are still becoming. You are still growing. And growth always takes courage.

If God is stirring something in you — act on it. Take the first step. Make the phone call. Write the outline. Register for the class. Meet with the pastor. Whatever it is, do it. God doesn’t give vision without also providing strength.

And even if others don’t understand — even if they laugh or say “at your age?” — let their doubt be your fuel. You’re not living to please them. You’re living to obey God.

Let’s break it down even further. Courage is choosing joy when sadness feels easier. It’s choosing faith when the news looks grim. It’s choosing love after loss. It’s choosing hope when the world feels dark. That’s the kind of courage that changes lives — starting with your own.

Don’t wait for the stars to align. Faith moves before the sky clears. Jehovah didn’t call you to play it safe. He called you to trust him, even when the way is unfamiliar.

Now let’s pray.

Jehovah, give us holy boldness. Help us walk forward even when the path is unclear. Remind us that age does not limit your power or purpose. Help us silence fear and follow faith. Let every step we take bring glory to you. In Jesus’ name—Amen.
