1 Corinthians 6:19 – “Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you…?”
Welcome to JUST STRAIGHT TALK. I’m R-E SAMPLE, and today’s message comes from the heart. We’re diving into something personal, spiritual, and practical — how we take care of the body God gave us. Not for vanity. Not for praise. But because our bodies are holy. They are temples.
You know, as we get older, we sometimes hear folks say things like, ‘Well, at this age, it doesn’t really matter anymore.’ But let me tell you — it does. It matters because God says it does. Our health is not just a medical issue. It’s a spiritual responsibility. 1 Corinthians 6:19 tells us that our bodies are the temple of the Holy Ghost. That means the way we treat our body is a reflection of how we honor God.
This episode kicks off our new season on Health, Habit, and Peace of Mind. So let’s talk about how your physical body, emotional balance, and spiritual walk are connected in ways that can change your whole outlook — and your whole life — for the better.
Now let’s break it down. Taking care of your body isn’t about chasing youth — it’s about honoring the life and breath you’ve still got. This body has carried you through decades of life. It’s walked through joy and pain, strength and weakness, and it still wakes up with you each morning. You may have some aches. Maybe a bad knee or high blood pressure. That’s life. But there’s still a lot you can do — not to be perfect, but to be intentional.
Start small. Stretch for five minutes every morning. Walk around your living room or your yard. Eat a real piece of fruit instead of a sugary snack. Drink a little more water than you did yesterday. Schedule that checkup you’ve been avoiding. These are not minor things — they are powerful acts of stewardship.
Your temple deserves maintenance. Would you let your roof cave in? Would you let the floor rot out? No. You’d do what you could, with what you had, to fix it. Your body is no different. Tending to it with love is not selfish — it’s spiritual. Because it says, ‘God, I appreciate what You’ve given me.’
And here’s the truth — when you treat your body better, everything else begins to shift. You sleep better. You think clearer. You carry yourself differently. Your confidence comes back. You begin to feel more present in your own life. That’s not coincidence — that’s alignment.
Let’s take this further. Our emotional well-being and spiritual walk are deeply tied to our physical health. You’ve probably noticed that when your body feels tired, your patience runs thin. When you’re in pain, your prayers get shorter. When you’re foggy, it’s harder to feel God’s presence.
That’s because our bodies and spirits were never meant to be separate. God created us as whole beings — body, mind, and soul. And each one affects the other. So if we truly want peace of mind, if we truly want to feel anchored in God, we’ve got to care for the vessel he placed us in.
Now, self-care doesn’t have to be expensive. You don’t need a spa day or personal trainer. You just need the willingness to listen to what your body is telling you. Are you drinking enough water? Are you moving your body? Are you resting enough? Are you breathing through the stress, or are you holding tension in your shoulders, in your jaw?
Even simple things like breathing deeply can reset your nervous system and calm your mind. Take five breaths right now, slow and full. That’s peace. That’s control. And that’s a habit worth building. You’re not weak for needing rest. You’re wise for taking it. You’re not broken for slowing down. You’re blessed to still be moving.
Let’s come back to 1 Corinthians 6:19 — ‘Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you…?’ That one verse reminds us of a foundational truth: God dwells in you. Not just your heart, not just your thoughts — in your actual body.
Temples in the bible were cared for, cleaned, and respected. There was reverence in how they were treated. That’s the lens we should use when we think about our own health. We’re not just brushing our teeth or checking our blood pressure — we’re tending to the house of God. That changes the way we move.
You wouldn’t drag mud through a church. So don’t drag neglect through your body. Don’t say, ‘I’m too old to change.’ That’s a lie from the enemy. The truth is, every day you wake up is another chance to try again. Another chance to be faithful in how you treat your temple.
This isn’t about six-pack abs or green smoothies. It’s about obedience. Gratitude. It’s about saying, ‘Lord, I may not be who I used to be, but I still belong to You — and I’m going to act like it.’
Jehovah, we come to you today with humble hearts. Thank You for our bodies — even the parts that ache, even the parts we’ve ignored. Thank you for bringing us this far. Father, help us care for these temples you’ve given us. Help us treat our bodies not with shame, but with love. Show us how to build new habits that honor you. Give us strength when we feel tired, discipline when we’re tempted, and hope when we’re discouraged. Let our self-care reflect our love for you. We ask this in the name of your son, Jesus Christ — Amen.
Your body is still a temple — treat it with love, not judgment. God is not finished with you yet. Take a walk. Eat something fresh. Get some rest. Breathe in his peace. You are still useful. You are still holy. And your health still matters.
