Proverbs 17:6 – “Children’s children are the crown of old men.”
Welcome to JUST STRAIGHT TALK. I’m R-E SAMPLE. Today’s episode is close to the heart — it’s about the blessing of being a grandparent. If you’re a grandparent right now, you know the feeling of joy that comes from seeing your children’s children grow. But being a grandparent is more than giving out candy and hugs — it’s about legacy, love, and leadership.
Today, we talk about what it really means to be a grandparent in a time when families are busier, more distant, and more distracted than ever. You may not live in the same house — or even the same city — but your influence still runs deep. Your presence matters. Your wisdom matters. Your love matters.
Jehovah God, thank you for the gift of grandchildren. Thank you for allowing us to live long enough to pour into another generation. Help us to be present, purposeful, and prayerful. Show us how to guide our grandchildren in truth and love, and remind us daily of how powerful our influence can be. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
What Makes Grandparenting So Special?
Grandparents are bridges between generations. You carry stories, values, and lessons that the younger ones haven’t yet learned. You’ve seen things. You’ve survived things. You’ve gained wisdom through experience — and that wisdom is gold for your grandchildren.
But here’s the thing: The world today is different. Technology moves fast. Kids grow up with screens in their hands and so many voices in their ears. That’s why your calm voice, your steady presence, your faithful example — is more important than ever.
You don’t have to be flashy. You don’t have to be perfect. You just have to be **present**. That means taking the time to talk. Listening when they speak. Showing up at school plays. Making phone calls. Sending cards. Praying with them. Letting them know that you’re there — and that they matter.
How to Be a Godly Grandparent
Share Your Stories
– Your grandchildren may not know the life you’ve lived. Tell them how you met their grandmother. Tell them about growing up without a microwave. Tell them how God brought you through.
– These stories are treasures — pass them down.
Pray for them Daily
– You may not be able to control everything they see or hear, but your prayers cover them in ways you can’t even imagine.
– Pray for their hearts, their decisions, their faith, and their future.
Model Godly Living
– Let them see you read your Bible. Let them hear you say grace. Let them know you trust in Jehovah.
– Your example may be the strongest sermon they’ll ever hear.
Make Time for Them
– Take them fishing. Cook together. Go for walks. Watch a movie. These memories stick with them long after they’ve grown up.
– Quality time shows love more than money ever could.
Be Their Safe Place
– Grandkids sometimes open up to grandparents in ways they can’t with parents.
– Be the one they can talk to — without judgment, without fear.
Encourage Their Dreams
– Tell them you believe in them. Cheer them on.
– Every kid needs someone in their corner — let that be you.
Grandparenting in a Noisy World
In today’s world, so many things compete for your grandchild’s attention — social media, peer pressure, tv, online trends. But there’s something sacred about a grandparent’s influence. It’s rooted in love. It’s patient. It’s steady.
Sometimes, the world feels chaotic. But when a child walks into their grandparent’s home and smells dinner cooking, hears an old gospel song playing, or just sees your face light up — that’s stability. That’s comfort. That’s legacy in motion.
You’re showing them what family looks like. What faith looks like. What love feels like.
If you’ve felt like you’re not doing enough — let that go. Your hugs, your stories, your phone calls, your laughter — they all add up. You don’t have to be perfect. You just have to be **present**.
Maybe you don’t see your grandkids as often as you’d like. Maybe you’ve had some family tension. Maybe you’re still learning how to connect with them. Don’t give up. Keep reaching out. Keep showing love.
Even a letter can touch a heart. Even a voicemail can remind them you care. Even a prayer whispered before bedtime can shift the atmosphere in their lives.
And if you’ve been blessed to see great-grandchildren — that’s another crown on your head. You’re walking proof of Jehovah’s faithfulness.
GOD, thank you for every grandparent listening today. Thank you for the love they give and the lessons they teach. Strengthen their hearts. Remind them of their value. Let them see the fruit of their faith in the next generation. May their words be wise, their presence be comforting, and their prayers be powerful. Let their love reach far beyond what they can see. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
