Hebrews 10:24–25 – “And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works… not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together.”
Welcome to JUST STRAIGHT TALK. I’m your host, R-E SAMPLE. Today, we’re going to talk about something that can truly warm your heart and strengthen your faith — staying connected with your family, your friends, and your spiritual circle using video calls.
In the world we live in today, many of us have children or grandchildren who live far away. Travel can be hard. Health can be unpredictable. But that doesn’t mean we have to be alone. Technology — when used with wisdom — can bridge the distance. And one of the best tools for that is video calling.
Jehovah God, thank you for giving us creative tools to stay close even when we’re miles apart. Help us to learn without fear and to embrace every good gift you’ve placed before us. Help us use this knowledge for good — to stay connected, to show love, and to grow together. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Why Video Calls Matter
Video calls let you see and hear the people you love. You can smile at your grandbaby’s first steps, hear your daughter’s voice, or share scripture with your spiritual family. That’s powerful.
Hebrews 10 reminds us not to forsake the assembling of ourselves together. In person is best, but when that’s not possible, video calls help fill the gap. They let us stay united in faith, in family, and in love.
Step-by-Step – How to Get Started
Let’s break this down so it feels doable — not scary.
Choose a Device
   – You’ll need a smartphone, tablet, laptop, or desktop with a camera.
   – Most modern devices come with one built-in. Just ask someone to show you where it is.
Choose an App
   – **Zoom**: Great for larger gatherings or Bible studies.
   – **WhatsApp**: Excellent for one-on-one family calls.
   – **Google Meet**: Easy if you already have a Gmail account.
   – **FaceTime**: Best if you and your family both use iPhones or iPads.
Download the App
   – On your phone or tablet, open the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play (Android).
   – Type in the name of the app, then tap “Download” or “Get.”
   – On computers, go to the website (like zoom.us or meet.google.com).
Set Up Your Account
   – Most apps will ask for your name, email, and sometimes a password.
   – Ask someone you trust to help you create this. Write your password down and keep it in a safe place.
Test a Call
   – Try calling one person first. Let them know you’re testing the app.
   – Sit in a well-lit room, face the camera, and speak clearly.
   – Remember: it doesn’t have to be perfect. You’re learning!
Adjust Settings
   – Volume too low? Use the side buttons or speaker icon.
   – Can’t see them? Make sure your camera is uncovered and facing you.
   – Feeling awkward? Smile. You’re doing great.
Tips for a Better Video Call
– Use a stand or prop your device up, so you don’t have to hold it the whole time.
– Make sure your internet connection is stable. If your video freezes, it’s likely a weak signal.
– Choose a quiet room to avoid background noise.
– Mute your mic when you’re not speaking in larger group calls.
– If someone sends you a meeting “link,” just tap or click it — no need to memorize numbers.
Faith-Based Ideas for Video Calls
Let’s not just use this for family — use it for faith too.
– Weekly Prayer Calls: Pick a time to pray with a friend or two.
– Virtual Bible Study: Invite others to read and reflect together.
– Sunday Fellowship: For those who can’t travel to church, call them after service for encouragement.
– Sharing Scripture: Open your Bible on one screen and read aloud to a loved one.
You’re not just calling people — you’re building spiritual bridges.
Encouragement for the Listener
Let me tell you something from the heart: you’re not too old for this. You’re not too slow, too late, or too behind. You just need someone patient to walk with you. That’s why I’m here.
Learning how to video call is not about being trendy — it’s about staying close to the people God gave you. It’s about hearing your cousin’s laugh again. It’s about checking in on a neighbor who lives states away. It’s about continuing to fellowship when roads are closed, planes are delayed, or health keeps you home.
Don’t let pride stop you. If you don’t know how, say so. Ask for help. Write down the steps. Try again. And when it finally clicks — oh, the joy you’ll feel seeing your loved one’s face smiling back at you!
Jehovah, thank you for the people in our lives. Thank you for the technology that helps us stay close. We ask that you remove the spirit of fear, the fear of learning, and the fear of change. Replace it with confidence, with peace, and with excitement. Let our calls be full of love and free from frustration. And let our hearts always stay connected through you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
I’m R-E SAMPLE, and this has been JUST STRAIGHT TALK. Give someone a call today. Don’t wait for them to call you. Reach out. Reconnect. Restore. And I’ll see you next time.
